Panthers struggle against Quincy Notre Dame, Unity
Palmyra’s Will Funkenbusch goes up for a shot against Unity.
by Mark Cheffey
Published: Wednesday, December 19, 2012 10:14 AM CST
The PHS varsity boys took their lumps against two strong Illinois teams last week,
falling at home to both Quincy Notre Dame and Unity.
“It was a tough week for the Panthers,” said Coach Brian Meny of the loses which came by 35 and 12
points respectively.
“I really feel like we are getting better at stretches during both games.” Meny said. “QND game took a lead 21-20 and that
was the first time all year QND didn’t have a lead in the second quarter.
“Only down 12 with 4 minutes to go in the third. I don’t think the score was really what it showed, on the final.”
QND ended up winning 84-49.
Palmyra had a difficult time with QND’s height advantage and had to deal with another in their 64-52 loss to Unity
Friday.
The Panthers also got out to another slow start and fell into a 16-4 first-period hole before starting to climb, but they still trailed 13
points at the half.
“The adjustments at half were really carried out by our players,” Meny said. “We forced 24 turnovers, but we got hurt on the
offensive glass giving up 17 points on second shot opportunities.”

2012-13 Prep Basketball Preview: Illinois boys capsules
Unity
Coach: Keith Carothers (49-106 at Unity, sixth season).
2011-12 record: 19-11 (4-4, tied for fourth place in the West Central Conference).
Returning starters: F Andrew Doyle, 6-2, Sr.; G Reed Bentzinger, 5-9, Sr.; F Thomas Donley, 6-1, Sr.
Other returning letterwinners: G Will Klusmeyer, 6-0, Jr.; C Lane Davis, 6-3, Jr.; G Alex Blickhan, 6-0, Jr.
New faces: G Adam Donley, 6-0, Fr.; Thomas Fielding, 6-0, Jr.; G Blake Wittler, 5-2, Jr.; G Mark Jansen, 5-9, Jr.
Key losses: G Matthew Duesterhaus, G Andrew Jansen, G Brett Jackson.
Outlook: Don't be surprised if the Mustangs pound the ball inside a little more often this season.
Unity has the size to do it. It's Carothers' largest team since he took the reins in 2007-08.
The post will be anchored by Doyle, a three-year starter who scored 11 points per game, and Donley, who added 7 points per game.
Blickhan came off the bench last year to score 10 points per game, while Bentzinger should once again be the team's steadiest shooter from the perimeter.
Carothers hopes to use last year's Class 1A regional title -- the team's first since 1990 -- as momentum for more success this
season.
"I'm looking forward to some very competitive practices as guys battle on a daily basis," Carothers said. "After losing the
guards we lost from last season, how we rebuild that position could determine our level of success."
