Class 1A boys state tournament: Unity's Will Klusmeyer played like a state champion-caliber golfer on the front nine Friday at the Prairie Vista Golf Course in Bloomington, Ill. His back nine, however, kept him from being in contention for the state title.
Klusmeyer carded a round of 12-over 84 and is in an eight-way tie for 57th place. Yet Klusmeyer was 2-over on the front nine. He bogeyed the par-4 first and par-3 fifth before taking birdie on the par-4, 365-yard ninth, which surrendered just eight birdies for the day.
Klumeyer's back nine was derailed by triple bogeys on the par-4 14th and par-4 18th. Klusmeyer wasn't alone in struggling on those holes. No. 14 ranked as the 14th-toughest hole for golfers, while No. 18 ranked as the toughest.
Klusmeyer is 14 strokes behind leader Nick McCall of North Shore Country Day. McCall leads Hamilton County's Landon Vaughan. The tournament concludes with another 18-hole round Saturday.

PETERSBURG, Ill. -- Will Klusmeyer kept his driver in his bag throughout most of the fall.
Yet Klusmeyer tested the driver out on the driving range before Monday's Class 1A sectional round at Shambolee Golf Course, and he found he was hitting it well. He decided to give it a shot during the competition, and it helped carry him to a round of 9-over 81, which was good enough to advance him to this weekend's state tournament at Bloomington.
"I hit my driver exceptionally well today off the tee," Klusmeyer said. "I was pretty surprised."
Klusmeyer, a junior from Unity, was the only area individual to advance from the field. His score gave him the fourth-best mark among individuals not advancing as part of a team. The top 10 individuals not advancing on a team advance to state.
West Hancock placed ninth out of 12 teams with a 381, and Brown County was 10th at 386. The three teams to advance were Taylor Ridge Rockridge (317), Winchester West Central (328) and Pleasant Plains (333). Rockridge's Dylan Daxon took medalist with a 71.
Klusmeyer's driver put him in prime position for his lone birdie of the day. On the par-5, 495-yard No. 4, Klusmeyer bombed his driver and took an 8-iron into the green before two-putting for birdie.
Klusmeyer will have a whirlwind weekend. He also plays on the Unity football team, and he has worked golf around his football schedule throughout the fall. He played in six regular-season golf events to meet the minimum tournament requirement so he could play in postseason events.
Klusmeyer plans to play Friday's opening round in Bloomington, then travel to Mendon for Unity's football game against Carrollton. He'll then return to Bloomington on Friday night and play his final 18 holes Saturday.
"It'll be a busy weekend," Klusmeyer said.
If Klusmeyer hits his driver like he did Monday, it could be a memorable one, too.
