Brian and Julie McAllister
Athlete and Supporter
It is easy to see why Brian was nominated as the most athletic of his senior class in 1977. He was a three-sport athlete dominating the court and field in each position. In football he received two letters and in his senior year he was 1st Team All-Conference Offensive Running Back and Defensive Halfback. He held the single season rushing record for over 20 years with 1,044 rushing yards and was also MVP Offense and Team Captain. In basketball Brian earned three letters and in his Junior year he was 1st Team All-Conference, Team Leading Scorer, and was named to the MVIT All-Tournament Team. Senior year was just as impressive. He earned 1st Team All-Conference, was the team’s leading scorer, Team MVP, Team Captain, Hannibal Thanksgiving Tournament Team, MVIT All-Tournament Team, and MVP Sportsmanship Award. In baseball Brian earned two letters. His senior year he was named 1st Team All-Conference, Team MVP, Team Captain, batted .529, and was selected by WCC Coaches for All State Consideration. After a remarkable athletic career at Unity, Brian went on to play for two years at Spoon River Junior College. He averaged 17 points per game as a freshman and 18.5 points per game as a sophomore. Sophomore year he was named 1st Team Region 24 and was selected to play in the Illinois Junior College All-Star Game. After his success as a student, Brian decided to give back to the Unity Mustangs by becoming a coach. He was the Assistant High School Baseball Coach in 2003 and was head baseball coach from 2004-06. In 2006 - 2009, he was the Junior High Assistant Basketball Coach and in the 2008-2009 season, the 8th Grade Team finished third in state. He also had the privilege of coaching the 2013-2014 High School Mustangs that finished third in state when they were 7th graders. Brian grew up in the Meyer Bottoms and attended Greenfield Elementary and Unity Middle and High School. Julie, his wife, was born and raised in Dubuque, Iowa and is a 1979 graduate of Dubuque Senior High School. Brian met Julie in Dubuque and they have been married for over 40 years.
Julie retired from a Financial Representative position with Country Financial on December 31, 2021. She worked in the insurance industry for over 34 years, with the last 22 as a Financial Representative. Julie now works part time in Quincy and is the Ursa Township Clerk and Indian Grave Drainage District Treasurer. Julie has helped coordinate sponsorships for many programs at Unity through her job along with volunteering numerous hours at sporting events such as ticket taker, running the concession stand, and coordinating the annual 3-on-3 basketball tournament. She has financially supported the Unity Schools and local community her entire career. Brian and Julie were long time members of the Sports Booster Club, where Brian served as President for several years. They are also members and supporters of the Friends of Unit 4.
Ken Ellerbrock (1973)
Athlete and Supporter
Ken Ellerbrock graduated from Unity in 1973, but not before making his mark on the Unity Mustangs Basketball Court. The Mustangs had their best season yet in 1973 with a record of 27 - 3. As Unity’s Team Captain, Ellerbrock led his team to victory during the Regional Tournament by first defeating Quincy Catholic and then ultimately beating an undefeated West Pike to take the Regional Title. The Mustangs won 19 games in a row to advance to the Sweet Sixteen before falling to Petersburg in Super Sectional play. Unity also won their second consecutive West Central Conference Championship with a 5-0 record. Ellerbrock has many great memories from his high school basketball career, from winning the Hannibal Thanksgiving Tournament to winning the MVIT. In his senior
year, Ellerbrock led the team in assists, was named to the MVIT All-Tournament Team, and he was also named to the West Central Conference Team. After high school Ellerbrock went on to Western Illinois where he graduated with a degree in Ag Business. He began working part-time construction as well as part-time farming, which eventually turned into full-time farming. He has been married for 33 years to Doni, and they have two children: Tim and Jamie. Ken is still following his passion for agriculture as a full-time farmer to this day. Ken is also a member and current Vice President of the Unit 4 Foundation. Ken and Doni still attend many Unity events and give back to the community in a multitude of ways.
Mike Myers (1961)
Athlete
Mike Myers, a 1961 graduate of Unity High School, was an outstanding all-around athlete. He was named the “All-Star” of his Senior Class which could not be more fitting. He was an All-Star Football player and he set numerous records for football; not only leading his team in stats, but also leading his team in work ethic. His senior year he took on the role of Team Captain. Along with his remarkable football career, he was also a leading basketball player. He set a single game scoring record his senior year of 41points when Unity played Nauvoo. Mike is quick to mention that without teamwork and his team passing him the ball, he would not have held that record.
Teamwork is a consistent theme for Mike when he looks back on his days at Unity. The coaches and teachers made a lasting impact by focusing on the idea of being hands-on and teaching from the heart. The importance of doing the right thing was a concept that was modeled by the teachers and there was an aura of cooperative spirit in the halls. The Mustangs were built on the legacy that it is more about being a team than an individual; no matter the wins or losses. Much of the spirit of being a Mustang was emphasized by the Pep Band in which Sandy, Mike’s future wife, played the drums. The Pep Band’s role during the games has always stuck with Mike. Mike notes that the Mustangs have always had a reputation of being go-getters, and he said once that gets in your blood, it stays
with you. The lessons he learned from Unity stuck with him his entire life, and he credits those lessons to Coach Jones and Coach Keane. When Coach Jones passed away, Myers felt like he lost a best friend, always remembering that life is more about the effort than the wins. Coach Keane was instrumental in Myers learning that it’s okay to make mistakes. Mike went on to graduate from WIU, and he then received a National Science Grant. This grant gave him the opportunity to work on secondary education and his Masters degree at the University of North Carolina. Mike then moved to Mansfield, Illinois with his wife Sandy to begin his teaching career. It was at Mansfield School District that Mike began his teaching and coaching career. Mike was the head
football and head track coach and he also taught Biology, Ag, and Shop. When he began teaching 4th grade health, he also started coaching the lightweight and heavyweight basketball teams. They then moved to Jacksonville, IL where Mike taught high school science, before eventually transferring to Armstrong Junior High, and then Turner Junior High to finish out his teaching career.
After 32 years of teaching, Mike is now retired. Mike and Sandy have three children: Carman, Craig, and Chad. Mike will carry aspects of Unity with him for the rest of his life: Coach Jones, Coach Keane, the sound of the pep band, and the true essence of what it means to be a team.
